The IRR talks true transformation

Jul 15, 2025
The Institute of Race Relations (IRR) will this week host a discussion between IRR Head of Policy, Dr Anthea Jeffery, and IRR Strategic Engagements Manager, Makone Maja, about how true economic transformation can be achieved.
The IRR talks true transformation

According to Maja, under the current framework of transformation, government interests are considered first whilst what’s best for the citizenry is secondary. “For 20 years, the government has withheld access to the development and economic ladders to millions of South Africans and it has convinced the populace that this is ‘transformation.’ This fake transformation must be appropriately labelled as what it actually is and South Africans are finally ready to resist it.”

“True transformation would move the needle on the numbers of unemployment, economic growth, and the rates of poverty and decline of state services and infrastructure. All of which have either stagnated or in some instances worsened since the advent of fake transformation,” says Maja

Maja will be interviewing Dr Jeffery about the IRR’s alternative proposal to BEE. She provides that South Africans who have observed the failures of race-based redress measures and are frustrated with the downward spiral direction our economy has taken as a result, may remain sceptical about how else the economy can become inclusive, were it not for racialised transformation.

The IRR draft policy, namely the Freedom From Poverty Bill, sufficiently responds to these concerns by proposing a policy framework unlike any other. It establishes health and school vouchers that will give households autonomy and choice over their healthcare and their children’s future and removes obstacles to economic growth by repealing race laws.

“The IRR has solutions to these complex issues that, if adopted, can help the economy overcome the stunted growth levels of the past decade and attract investors who will inject their cash into various industries, trigger a rise in the construction of infrastructure and other projects, and create sustainable jobs. These jobs are how we draw the marginalised into the economy.”
