The IRR will be hosting an online briefing tomorrow to mark the publication of the second in a series of policy-solution papers, The IRR's Blueprint for Growth: Slash Waste, Cut Taxes.
This paper consolidates in-depth IRR research into the fiscal potential of the South African state, recommending two crucial changes to bring about rapid improvement, both fiscally and economically:
Says Pretorius: “A key component of choosing growth over poverty is getting bang for your buck, whatever government buys, and allowing hardworking South Africans to keep more of what they earn. There is no such thing, after all, as government money – only taxpayers’ money.
“The dual solution set out in The IRR's Blueprint for Growth: Slash Waste, Cut Taxes will not only ensure that South Africa moves on from a catastrophic period of race-rigged and cadre-based public procurement that has fuelled massive corruption, but also empower South Africans to benefit from the end of the corruption nightmare.
“South Africa’s pro-poverty forces have over many years eroded the opportunities of South Africans to freely participate in a value-add economy where wealth is created across all parts of the country. Instead, a wealth-destroying ideology has trapped millions in poverty, whilst empowering pro-poverty cronies, cadres, crooks, and comrades to pillage and plunder.”
Pretorius concludes: “Fixing public procurement and empowering hardworking South Africans is a fundamental part of putting our country on the path to economic growth and the upliftment of all.”
