Don't miss next week's webinar on the latest report from the Institute of Race Relations, An In-Depth Look into the Quality of Life of LGBT South Africans.

On paper, South Africa appears to be a haven for the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) community. The South African Constitution is one of the most progressive in the world and it is supported by other legislation protecting LGBT rights. However, to what extent do LGBT South Africans experience the benefits of these laws?

This is the question analyst and author of the report Gerbrandt van Heerden seeks to answer in his in-depth examination of the quality of life of LGBT South Africans.

He explores the experience of the LGBT community in schools, the workplace, and the healthcare system. He also looks at the overall safety of LGBT Africans, and highlights specific challenges faced by transgender South Africans, and the impact of Covid-19 on the quality of life of LGBT people.

In next week's webinar, Van Heerden will discuss his assessment of the quality of life of LGBT South Africans. He will also offer recommendations for supporting existing policies and promoting the full inclusion of LGBT and other gender-nonconforming people in South Africa.

Van Heerden writes: "South African LGBT citizens are fortunate to live in a country which provides them with several political freedoms such as equal access to goods and services and the right to marry. However, political freedoms ultimately need to translate into economic freedoms and reach all corners of South African society, including those living in the margins.”
