South Africa’s ambitions for higher economic growth and more jobs will remain out of reach unless the country gets its infrastructure right. No economy can function – let alone expand – when the basic systems that support daily life and business activity are failing.
The latest report from the Institute of Race Relations (IRR), Reinforcing South Africa’s Growth through Infrastructure, presents an updated assessment of the country’s infrastructure crisis and proposes actionable reforms.
The report − the fifth instalment of the IRR’s 2025 Blueprint for Growth series − outlines the current state of infrastructure, covering water and electricity provision, as well as rail, roads, and ports, and emphasises the urgency of policy reforms.
To mark the release of the updated report, its author, IRR Researcher Anlu Keeve, will join IRR Head of Strategic Communications Hermann Pretorius in an online briefing on Tuesday 29 July to discuss the key findings and policy recommendations.
Keeve notes: “Fixing South Africa’s infrastructure will not be quick or easy, but the stakes are too high for half-hearted attempts.”
If the government really wants the country to shift onto a higher growth track, with the incalculable benefits this will bring to the people of South Africa and the broader region, it is time to build the future, not just talk about it.
