Letter: Address the real issues - Business Day, 4th July 2012.

Jul 04, 2012
Georgina Alexander, a researcher at the Institute, argues that the high unemployment rate in South Africa is a symptom of a much larger problem.

 Sir,

The debate about the new job seekers grant versus the youth wage subsidy refers.

The current level of unemployment is a symptom of much larger and interconnected problems.  South Africa’s low growth, restrictive labour laws, and poor education system all have a great impact on the unemployment rate. If the Government wants to decrease poverty it should address these issues rather than hand out more money.
