South Africa’s under-five mortality rate has fallen relatively slowly in the past two decades compared to much of the rest of the world, according to the South African Institute of Race Relations. Globally, child mortality has been declining due to advances in healthcare and general living conditions.

Extended household numbers rose sharply by almost a million in just two years and were the only type of household to experience growth, according to the latest South Africa Survey, published by the South African Institute of Race Relations (IRR) last week.

The number of domestic workers in South Africa has declined over the past ten years according to data published by the South African Institute of Race Relations in its annual South Africa Survey this month. The number of domestic workers declined from 1 215 000 in 2003 to 1 153 000 in 2012, or by 5%.

A combined total of 153 392 school-aged children between 6 and 18 left the Eastern Cape, the Free State, Limpopo, and the North West between 2001 and 2007, but only 90 998 moved into those provinces.
