Economic Freedom brings Peace and Prosperity – South Africa is losing it

On the most comprehensive measure of economic freedom available, a decade ago South Africa ranked 41 out of 144 countries measured. Last year, we ranked a poor 89 – a slide of 48 places in just over ten years.

A declining economic freedom ranking matters to each and every one of us living in this country. It affects every aspect of our lives. A massive fall in the rankings means that all South Africans are losing on the key ingredients of economic freedom, which are choice, voluntary exchange, freedom to compete, and protection of persons and property.

The 2014 Report analyses 152 countries in detail and ranks them in order of their level of economic freedom. The African star performer has been Mauritius, a country that deliberately set out to improve the per capita incomes of its people, particularly by making the country an attractive investment destination. It is high time for South Africa to adopt policies that will improve its ranking and attract investors instead of driving them away.
